Work item types
Define the categories — Bug, Feature, Chore, and more — that tasks can be tagged with across the organization.
Work item types categorize tasks across your whole organization —
Bug, Feature, Chore, and any others you define. They're org-wide
configuration, not per-project, so a type you create here is available on
every task. Manage them at /pm/work-item-types, reached from the
Types button in the Projects page header.
What you can do here
- Create a type — click New type, give it a Name (e.g. Bug), pick a Color, and optionally tick Default type for new work items. Click Create.
- Edit a type — change its name, color, or default flag.
- Delete a type — remove one that's no longer used.
Each type shows a color dot, and the default type carries a Default badge.
How types are used
Once defined, a type is applied to a task from the Type card on the task detail page. Tasks can also have no type. A default type, if you set one, is what new work items start with.
Tips
- Keep the set small and meaningful. A handful of types people actually use beats a long list nobody picks from.
- Use Color consistently with how your team already thinks about work (e.g. red for Bug) so boards read at a glance.
- Pick a sensible Default so most tasks land in the right category without anyone thinking about it.
Permissions
Creating, editing, and deleting work item types is an admin-level action governed by task-type configuration permissions. Applying a type to a task only needs task edit permission.
